Nave Gallery Celebrates Fifth Anniversary
How Do You Say “Five”?

SOMERVILLE, Mass. – On Thursday, October 15, the Nave Gallery celebrates its fifth anniversary by bringing together hundreds of community artists and supporters of the arts for a night of celebration. The NAVE@5 birthday party, held at the Nave Gallery just outside Teele Square, features regional and local musicians, an art lover’s dream of a silent auction, and local craft beer will be served. The event is held from 7 - 10 pm and there is a $5 cover charge, with all proceeds benefiting the Gallery. For more information please see navegallery.org.

The Nave: innovative, experimental, non-commercial, collaborative
For the past five years, the Nave Gallery has redefined the meaning of art and creativity by providing a space for local and regional artists and musicians to explore and push the boundaries of the art form. Nave@5 celebrates the gallery as a strong and dynamic force for the arts and features many of the musicians and artists who have participated in the Gallery’s programming since its inception.

“The Nave is an outstanding arts space powered by grassroots energy and the hundreds of artists who share their work with the public,” said Susan Berstler, ARTSomerville Director. “Much of the work that makes the Nave possible is carried out behind the scenes by a dedicated and talented group of volunteer activists. Because we contribute our time, we can do more than many commercial galleries, and we are dedicated to a nonprofit mission to make the arts accessible to the entire community.”

A birthday calls for cake – and more!
A particular highlight of the NAVE@5 birthday is a one-of-a-kind art portfolio to be raffled off at the celebration. This unique portfolio – a varied collection of local artists’ work – will be housed in a tin lunchbox whose exterior has been altered by Somerville sculptor and metal worker Skunk, the leader and founder of the Subversive Choppers Urban Legion (SCUL), a Boston based bicycle group that builds and rides mutant bicycles, choppers and tall bikes. The event also features a silent auction that offers guests opportunities to bid on art (donated from local studios and artists such as Abrazos Press, Karen Aqua, Charles Daniels, Michelle Fiorenza, and V Van Sant); music lessons; and other goodies from area businesses.

Music for the evening includes the Jamaica Plain-based Indie quartet, Shepherdess; folk rock band Mr. Sister; and DJ Mark E. Moon. There will be a cash bar featuring local craft beers from Cambridge Brewing Company and Pretty Things Beer, as well as a variety of wines from Bear Flag Wines.

Sponsors of Nave@5 include Bear Flag Wines, Blue Cloud Gallery, Cambridge Brewing Company, Event Temps, Guru Catering, Lyndell’s Bakery, 02 Yoga, Pretty Things Beer and Ale Project, Pro Print Printing, Redbones, and Season to Taste Catering.

How do you say “five”?
To help promote the celebration, the Gallery is asking people to send in creative ways of saying “five.” Submissions may be posted on the Gallery’s Web site or other promotional materials. Please send your work to Tori Costa (tcosta@navegallery.org).

The Nave Gallery, located just outside Teele Square, Somerville, MA, is a collaborative effort between ARTSomerville and the Clarendon Hill Presbyterian Church. Solely operated by volunteers, the Nave Gallery provides exhibition space for both local and regional artists. Area musicians are regularly featured and the Gallery provides a great opportunity for visitors to purchase affordably priced original art. The Nave Gallery participates every summer in Davis Square’s ArtBeat celebration; sponsors Project Mum, an open-air summer dance party under the McGrath Highway in Somerville, MA; and has sponsored music festivals in collaboration with the Somerville Open Studios. When DJing he performs with the Big Digits, a group that was named Best Dance/Electronic act in the Boston Phoenix's Best Music Poll. Mr. Sister
Amelia Emmet plays dark yet infectious pop songs with a lush assortment of instruments. Originally known as Dogs and Trains and later as Brother/Sister, Amelia expertly marries the sounds of accordion, banjo, trombone, and acoustic guitar with her captivating voice and exceptional lyrics. Amelia is frequently accompanied by Faces on Film singer Mike Fiore and Hallelujah the Hills’ Elio DeLuca and Brian Rutledge. http://www.myspace.com/mrsisterboston

Shepherdess
Hailing from Jamaica Plain, Shepherdess is part heart-felt folk/part balls-out rock, pairing blistering guitar solos with glimmering vocals, and traditional instruments with bizarre effects. The end result can be compared only to Cat Power on speed (or perhaps Kate Bush fronting The Wipers). Hilken Mancini (Gramercy Arms, Punk Rock Aerobics, Fuzzy) plays guitar and sings and Emily Arkin (The Operators, The Quicunx) plays violin in the acoustic version of Shepherdess; the full-on band includes rhythm section Mike Savage (Fudge, Death Vessel) on drums and Winston Braman (Thalia Zedek Band, Consonant, Fuzzy) on bass. Their first, self-titled record was released on Kimchee Records in 2007.

Skunk
A Somervillian since 1999, Skunk’s art is created from used material once destined to landfill or recycling centers. When he’s not creating art Skunk spends his spare time being FleetAdmiral Skunk of SCUL, a Somerville-based bicycle chopper gang of rebel space pirates. Skunk’s work can be purchased at Magpie in Davis Square or at Honeyspot in Jamaica Plain. http://www.skunkadelia.com/
